learning american sign language poem

by Bobby Vanecko

the sign for “learn” is
left hand flat, facing forwards
right hand reaching down
towards the outstretched left palm
fingers pinching together on the palm
in a grabbing motion
as if picking up the knowledge from the left hand
which represents a book
then bring the right hand up towards the forehead
depositing the book’s wisdom directly into the brain.
and you can't learn without help
so the sign for “help” is
left hand flat outstretched, facing forwards
right hand thumbs up
placed sitting upright on the outstretched left palm
then slowly raise both hands up
the whole time staying connected
as if the left hand is helping the right one up
thumbs up for helping others
thumbs up for learning.
