Driving around your hometown, listening to R.E.M.

by Jocelyn Anderson

I sat on Matt’s porch and saw the bluest sky
Where we smoked so many cigarettes

Where the dog I never saw is dead now
Obviously

“WE HEART OUR KIDS AND DOGS
AND WE HOPE THAT YOU DO TOO!”

The road to the school looks the same
but the parking lot used to be bigger and

none of that stuff was there when I went there
Two Dunkies across the street from each other

In Warner? It’s the end of the world
But that hill is as steep as I remember

Let’s go knock on that guy’s door
Whoever lived there really doesn’t anymore
